There is no single perfect measurement for every microphone and voice, so use a repeatable starting point and a short listening test.

Start close and slightly off-axis

Begin roughly a hand span from the microphone and turn it a little away from the direct path of breath. Use a pop filter when the microphone is sensitive to plosives.

If the voice sounds boomy, increase distance slightly or move the microphone away from a corner. If it sounds thin and roomy, move closer before increasing gain.

Aim the microphone intentionally

Clean what remains

Good placement does not eliminate every fan, traffic, or room sound. Process the original source with a suitable preset, compare before and after, and keep the version that preserves a natural voice. The cleanup should complement the placement, not replace it.

Adjust one symptom at a time

A harsh breath blast calls for more off-axis angle or a pop filter. Excessive room sound calls for a closer position. Desk thumps call for isolation. Treating every symptom by changing gain makes it difficult to understand the real cause.

Photograph or mark the final stand, chair, and microphone positions for recurring sessions. If another person uses the setup, let them adjust for comfort and voice level rather than copying a measurement blindly. The repeatable part is the test method, not an exact distance for every speaker.
