A Repeatable Podcast Audio Cleanup Workflow

Organise sources and permissions

Keep the original recordings, remote guest files and any video together with a session note. Identify whether each speaker has a separate track or everyone is already mixed. Separate tracks make level changes and local repairs easier; a mixed recording cannot always be separated cleanly afterwards.

Confirm permission to publish the conversation and use any music. Remove accidental private discussion from the editing copy before sending material for external processing.

Build the conversation before polishing it

Choose takes, remove technical restarts and make editorial cuts first. Preserve context, responses and natural pauses. Use short fades where needed rather than leaving abrupt room-tone changes. If a word is masked or clipped, mark it for review with the speaker rather than assume denoising will recover it.

For a video podcast, keep the picture linked to the intended audio edit. Preserve an untouched session so you can reverse a mistake.

Treat speakers according to their recordings

Compare cleanup on each noisy source separately where available. A close, quiet host and a distant guest should not automatically receive identical treatment. In Studio, choose a suitable mode and check a quiet phrase, an overlapping exchange and the loudest moment before accepting the result.

Do not repeatedly process an already processed output to chase silence. Return to the original if the guest’s voice becomes dull, watery or incomplete.

Balance the episode after cleanup

Adjust speaker levels on the assembled episode and follow the requirements of your actual publishing platform. Noise removal and loudness finishing are separate decisions. Raising a quiet guest too much can raise residual noise as well; automation on the relevant phrases may be more useful than a large global boost.

Add music after the dialogue is understandable. Listen at low volume: a decorative bed should not hide the words.

Review the exported episode, not just the timeline

• Check the opening, each guest transition and the final sentence.
• Listen for clipped peaks, cut breaths and shifting room tone.
• For video, check lip sync at several points, including the end.
• Keep an editing master and a separate publication file.
• Download temporary processing results before their displayed expiry.
